The Azalea Historic District is a neighborhood in central Tyler, the northernmost border is about six blocks south of downtown.  This area became Tyler's second National Register Historic District in 2003, joining the recently added Charnwood District in the city's list of historic neighborhoods.  The area is known most notably for it's namesake azaleas, they were first introduced to Tyler in 1929 by local plant nursery expert Maurice Shamburger.  After finding the results he was looking for in a test garden, he started shipping azaleas  to Tyler by the boxcar from Georgia.  Today you can still find some of the original azaleas planted in Tyler, dating back to the 30s and 40s.  The Azalea Trails are held each March​, a three week long event.  Festivities include a 10 mile tour route past the area's most prestigious homes, a 10K run, historic home tours and an art festival in nearby Bergfeld Park. Bergfeld Park also has tennis courts and an amphitheater.

This neighborhood is also know for holding many of Tyler's most beautiful and ornate homes, spanning a variety of different styles.  Plan a day to take a walk or a drive through some of the many beautiful neighborhoods, such as Sunnybrook, Fair Meadows, Magnolia Gardens, R Bergfeld, Emir Shuford, Belmont Park, George Murphy, M Shaw, W L Watkins,  and South Park Heights, you won't be disappointed.
